Where You'll Find Me

I'm currently running my blog over at WritersAfterDark.net. I'd love it if you stopped by and hang for a bit! I'll return the favor, promise!

Running two blogs gets a bit difficult, so bear with me while I figure things out. In the meantime, if I could interest you in industry news, writing tips, and poking some fun at writerly problems, you'll find me here:

Q & A Time

1 ~ What is your favorite genre of book?
Oh, goodness. I really don't know that I have a favorite genre. I like Romance, Thrillers, YA, NA, Sci-fi, Chick Lit, Mysteries, etc, etc. You could say either: a) I don't discriminate against genres or b) I'm an all genre lover. ;)

2 ~ Do you have any pets? If so, what kind?
Yes, a boy and a girl. What? My kids can't be my pets? Ok, then no. We had a cat whose name was Milo but because of allergies we had to give him away :(

3 ~ Do you have a day job? If so what is it?
At the moment I am a stay at home mom, a full time wife & a part-time writer that hates packing away laundry.

4 ~ What would be your dream vacation spot?
Anywhere, I'm desperate at the moment so any spot will do, you pick. But if you really don't want to help then I'd go with a cruise around the Caribbean.

5 ~ Who is your biggest supporter?
I have to chose one so I say my husband..., but I'll throw my Mom in there too for good measure.

6 ~ What is your biggest pet peeve?
Drivers not using their signals. It drives me crazy. I can't read minds you know, no matter how hard I try I really can't, so USE YOUR SIGNALS... thanksmuch.

7 ~ What books have most influenced your life?
The Color of Water by James McBride, I can't help but love that if you fight hard enough you can achieve anything. Even when race, gender, society, & your family is against you. I read it years ago when I was in H.S. and to this day it still inspires me.
Also, the Harry Potter books because they reinforced my love for reading.

8 ~ Do you have a bucket list and if so name your top 3 things on it?
Errr.... sure I have a list? Never really thought about it but I do have things I want to/must do:
 1- Publish a book.
2- Celebrate a good 75years of marriage. (with my current husband)
3- Lose my last 15lbs of extra baby weight. (preferably before my 75th wedding anniversary.)

9 ~ If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one thing, what would it be?
A boat!

10 ~ Who is your favorite Disney hero/heroine?
Wow, I think this is the one question that stumped me! I guess Mickey Mouse? Simba? Belle? I don't have one favorite unfortunately.

11 ~ Do you believe that you can judge a book by its cover?
I think you can judge it but you wouldn't be right. Books are far more complex than their covers. That being said, have I bought books because the cover attracted me? Sure. Would a cover stop me from buying a book whose description intrigues me, no. Hey, for all I know they are just indie writers who can't yet afford a good book cover designer ;)

The book...

I've been done with my first draft for a few months now and have re-written parts of it over and over... and over again. I've been letting it sit for a while and now it's time I go back and read it again with a clear mind. I have certain aspects that I already know I want to change. I will not get into details of the book at the moment, I'm not ready because the book is not ready.

I should be working on it right now, I know, but I'm busy drinking coffee and watching my kids play and hoping I magically come up with all the answers. I probably should be outlining but I cannot do that with my books for the life of me. I liked it back in high school and college, I thought outlining was the answer to all my prayers when I had to write anything but not now. I tried it and found myself staring at my screen for far too long. So that went out the window and instead I jumped into my thoughts and let the characters guide me. I have a fairly good idea of where I want my stories to go but what happens in between surprises me just as much as it would anyone who *might* read them.

I'm busy trying to figure out how to find a good copy editor/proofreader that I can actually afford. This whole you get what you pay for or you don't pay so you don't get is killing me. I also don't want to get taken advantage of so the whole thing is turning into a nightmare. And then I have to figure out the cover and who I can get to design it, again, someone that I can afford and that wont surprise me by making me pay for something that's already out there or will be after I've paid for it. Who and how do you trust? blah, blah, blah... who, when, how? I just have to remember to keep my determination alive and keep on going, right? What's the point of giving up before I start? No point, exactly.

Am I me?

I am me.
Just not me, me.
I'm a fake version of myself. One that sometimes pretends she is fierce and has the confidence of an angry mother. She is that version that, on a whim, started this blog, a Facebook page and opened a Twitter account. Then she left and I'm in charge and I'm a bit confused to tell you the truth. Couldn't she hang around and tell me what to do next?

I can tell you the one thing I learned for sure: Social Media is a BEAST! But you probably already knew that. Either that or you are bigger and badder and know how to conquer the beast. Lucky you. (Don't judge my use of badder, it sounded interesting in my head.) (No, it's not used in my book.)

So apart from me not being me in the confidence department I'm also not S.K. Anthony. That B is my alter ego and to be honest I want to be her when I grow up. She thinks she can write like it's nobody's business and share stories that are entertaining. I'm not talking grammar here people, just that she can put her work out there. She tends to show up only when I'm working on the book and when I need help over here she excuses herself saying that she is tired, typical. So...

Dear S.K. Anthony,

Help a sistah out.

Love,
The real me.

Fear

It consumes you.
It stops your track.
It makes you wonder if you even know yourself anymore.
But,
It also makes you stronger.

If you push through your fear you will find out just what you are capable of. It only exists within you and only you can overcome it. Yes, you need help along the way. Sometimes you allow fear to take you to dark places and if you are lucky you have at least one person who will hold your hand and show you the light. The same light that lives in you. The same light that gives you strength. You know its in you but you need that reminder once in a while. I'm grateful that I have a couple of hands holding the light up for me but they can only illuminate my path so much. The rest is on me.

Fear, you are nothing. I will overcome you. Maybe not yet, but I will.
I have back up so watch out.

Writer's Block

I feel it right now.

Why? Because I’m nervous.

This is my first post on this blog, and you know how doing things for the first time can be... You hope you do it right, you hope you make an impression, and you hope he calls you back, OK that last one may not apply, but I do hope you come back.

My name is S.K. Anthony and I am writer (or at least I pretend to be) I am a mother of two, a wife of one, and a dreamer. I dream of sharing some of my imagination with the world in form of writing. I tend to imagine a lot so why not share? I want to shut up that voice in my head that says I can't do it and I need an outlet for my frustrations, hence this blog.
If you are here reading, welcome. If you are not, then clearly I'm losing my mind and I'm talking to myself in a very scary way. I may look into a psychologist but not until I publish that book, after all, one might have to completely lose their mind in order to open themselves up for a life full of criticisms. Then again, no one might read my work and that's alright. At the very least I will do what I set out to do and that will be my biggest accomplishment.
Wish me luck.
And good luck to you in your dreams. (This again applies to me if I'm the only one reading, Win-win!)

But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
